DVLA regulations state that all group two and group three licence holders are required to undergo a fitness check due to the potentially more serious consequences in the event of an accident. In addition to this, all fork lift truck drivers must also undergo a fitness check. DVLA guidelines on the exact frequency of the required assessment for group 2 and group three licence holders are as follows:
- On application for the licence
- Pre-employment
- On renewal of the licence
- At the age of 45, and every five years thereafter
Fork lift truck driver fitness requirements include good eyesight, adequate hearing and reasonable head and neck mobility. The HSE document, “safety in working with lift trucks” HS(G)6 [1]) states that it is good practice for all operators and potential operators to be screened (occupational health assessment) for fitness before beginning employment and again at regular intervals in middle age.
Category two and three fork lift truck driver medicals screen for the following conditions:
- Epilepsy and other neurological conditions
- Diabetes
- Psychiatric illness
- Cardiovascular disease
- Blood pressure
- Musculoskeletal disease which may interfere with vehicle control
As an employer, you should always judge an individual’s fitness for operating any kind of vehicle on a case-by-case basis. Your aim should be to match the requirements of the job available with the fitness and abilities of the applicant. It is your responsibility to ensure that all drivers under your employ are fit for their given tasks and you may be liable for any injury or accident that occurs should an employee not be fully qualified and capable to complete their given task. This applies to all drivers of LGV’s, PSV’s as well as a fork lift truck driver.
